Felt good for first 5K , second half some niggles reminded me to take it easy.

It was 15 O C at 5.00am (every Queenslander would be complaining about the chill in the air) I was rugged up with a long sleeved jersey but really should have been out in a singlet - ideal running conditions.

I have managed 7 days on the trot!!!

A shocking run on Tues, I only realised I was going slowly when I had great difficulty overtaking an old lady out walking her poodle.

I compensated Wed by going out in the evening when my stiff old body has warmed up a little and the creaking is lessened by the application on some WD40 to the joints.

Today I took a different course because I didn't want to run in the pitch dark of the early part of Roo+Lake, so I ran my 'Cycle' 10K loop which is all road and well lit. It is good not having run the course before. I t means I have no comparison times from when I was fit.

I have 'run' Roo+Lake in 38m50 so running my cycle course means I don't have to beat myself up for running 13mins slower than my 'PB' over 11K !

Saw Spandau Ballet supported by Tears for Fears on Tues eve. I really enjoyed TFF.

As for Spandau , it's always good to see fellow Gooners.

I ran my 6KM Roo course this morning (5.00am = commitment!)

I say ran but I was thinking the pace was more like warm down after a tough interval session pace!

The Doctor thought my calf injury might be a tear of the gastrocnemius which meant rest and slow recovery sessions in order to avoid any recurrence. It felt fine this morning but then it has felt fine cycling and general walking for a while.

I managed 19 Pull Ups in one go this morning . I'd like to challenge myself to a goal number but not sure what to pick? How about 50!

"50 Pull ups by age 50" - sounds like a challenge.

1989 City to Surf Results

Still biding my time with the calf injury = no running but cycling and weights on alternate days. So in the meantime I thought I'd blog something from the past.
Bruce Graham posted the 1989 C2S results on his blog and looking down the names I found some interesting people and names. Click on the photo for a bigger clearer look at the results.

I have very little information from this era of my running career - no training records only some details from the few track races I did in 1990 and 1992. I had not competed since 1986 and probably would not have raced again had it not been for me deciding to go 'backpacking' to Oz in my late 20's in 1988 . I shared a flat in Sydney (literally on the harbour in Fairlight) with Stu Moore another Shaftesbury Harrier. He got me back into training and racing though it was really for fun nothing too serious like I am now! We did all the Sydney Fun Runs including the c2s. I actually did it in 1988 but have no record of my performance, I do remember Lisa Martin (Ondienki) going past me on Heartbreak Hill!

Anyhow's the following year, remarkably, I was still running (alongside partying big time and then meeting my wife Natalie in Feb 1989). I cant recall too many details from the race though I did video the Channel 10 coverage which I still have (but cant play as I dont have a VCR anymore!). So seeing the results on Bruce's blog brought back the memories.

Monna's of course was in his prime and ran away with it 1st 40m34.

The next name that stands out for me is Dr.Jamie Harrison 5th 42m26, closely followed by

Paul Arthurs 6th 42m29, who would in later years gain a c2s victory.

7th in 42m30 Dave Buzza, a fellow Pommie who had gone to my Uni - Loughborough and is still competing in Masters very well. He was on for a scorcher in last years London Marathon but blew up spectacularly but still ran around 2h35 (for a 45 y.o. !)

8th Place was Robert Spilling in 42m56. He is still competing and showed me the way home in the 2008 c2s to win the M45 Cat . If it was any consolation I was a lot closer to Robert in 2008 that I was in 1989!

12th was Jim Golledge in 43m52. Jim was in our Reebok Manly team. A little guy with red hair, a quite character but very talented!

13th was Simon Hedger in 44m02. Simon was also in the Reebok Manly team. I had shared a flat with Simon in Harbord (Manly) and used to do a lot of what little training I did with him. A fellow Pom!

15th Bruce Graham 44m04 (also see finish photo with Simon and Bruce) So this was probably my only ever race against Bruce ! He has gone from strength to strength and won the National M45 5000m/10,000m/8KM CC crown for the last two years as well as the National Half Mara Champs .

17th was Kenny Raupach in 44m16, he might not have been in our team but we hang around together socially. I remember playing snooker in Kenny's parents house in upmarket Mossman.

He was a physio and ran with Shaftesbury when travelling in later years in London. 17th in 44m16 was frighteningly good when I look back at it now.

36th 45m32 Richard Roberts . Still competing in M40's had the better of DrJH in the CC at the World Masters in 2009.

38th in 45m39 was John Herries. Yet another Anglo/Ozzie who we hang out with. Now living in UK and surfing down in Cornwall.

I was 44th in 45m55 - Rubbish but I was just having fun!

45th in 45m58 was Mike Mcleod!!! Yes THE Mike McLeod British international/Olympian 27mxx 10,000m runner. What Mike was doing that day I do not know!

54th Horst Wegner I believe holds some NSW Masters record

83rd Guy Leech - Ironman - I only mention him because on Sunday I bought a cheap road bike for training and it has his name, signature etc all over it, co incidence!

91st Don Wallace ; a Queenslander who is my age, still competing and making a big name for himself in the 6foot (Top 3 last year, this year?).

142nd Geoff Berkeley who is still competing M40's and is a top class performer I have mentioned a few times on this blog.

150th Dennis Fitzgerald ,if its the Dennis Fitzgerald I know, Dennis just turned 40 (so maybe he was quite young in this race 19 or 20? Anyhow's Dennis could arguably claim the Brissy crown for 'King of the Roads' due to his multitude of road race wins around these parts for many many years.

154th Chris Wardlaw a former c2s winner and future coach of Craig Mottram.

158th Stuart Moore my former Fairlight flat mate and the guy who inspired me to come to Australia in the first place! and that is where I'm going to draw the line as it's late and my eyes hurt from looking at the small print. There are many more names still in these result , former club mates (Owain Lewes) and others who I know still run. If I missed you and your reading this = apologies , not a deliberate slant , post me a comment to tell me about your performance!

If anyone has the 1988 results, I'd love to know what I did!

As a side note, 226 runners bettered 50m00 in 1989 whilst in 2009 only 136 managed to better the mark (Net time).

One of my former training buddies (Colin Godfrey) recently sent this email to our former training group reminiscing over a training session!!

Well I guess many of our training sessions were like races!

Dear All,

The message for Sedar (Passover, this is for Dave) night as we know is;

Why is this night different from all other nights?

I feel it is only right at this time of year to reflect on my most
memorable Sedar running experience.

I was a young brash 19 year old, enjoying my first year at Wolverhampton
Polytechnic. It was Spring 1990, and I had returned home for the
holidays very excited about the forth coming track season. In my mind
this was going to be my time.

By this stage of my career, I was beating James on the Hill and 3 mins
interval sessions, and so in my mind I was now (Coach) Alf's main athlete.

It was the first Sedar night, and I received a call from James saying
that he was finishing work early and that Alf had told him I was doing a
track session and could he join in.

The session was 12 * 300's (90 sec) with 100 jog. The setting was
Parliament Hill. James decided that because of the wind we would start
at the 400 mark and run two bends. It was agreed we would take turns
leading them out.

My best session until then averaged in the low 43's. This session we
were in the low 42's. Whenever James led one out I would sit on his
shoulder on the back straight just to let him know I'm there and that I
have more to give, but I resisted the temptation to overtake. It was
only a matter of time he would break! Or so I thought.

What struck me was James's recovery, whilst I gasped for air slowly
jogging the 100. James was talking about splits and memorising the
times. I just could not get through my head, how come I had not broken
him.

The session continued all were under 42.5 and we were about to start the
last one. James took it out. I sat on his shoulder round the first
bend and then hit the front down the back straight. This was it, the
defining moment when boy became Master! Going in to the final 100 round
the 200 bend all was good, and then it happened...approaching the
steeple chase barrier, the tightening up in the arms, legs and lungs
started to hit home and then, the heavy breathing, googly eyes,
tippy-tappy Zola Buddesque feet of James started to pull along side, and
as he past, his sweat flicked off his face and chest in to me.

I crossed the line crushed, shattered and broken, to hear the words,
"Well done, Master!"

It was such a humbling experience, and that Sedar night I sat around the
table absolutely gutted.

There no doubt would have been other times, but unfortunately, fate was
to play me a bad hand a month later resulting in a career ending injury,
but without doubt if there is one session which I can think back on
which I can remember everything about as if it were yesterday, then this
was the one.

Ps. Jeff and James talked about one run where Sony Walkman Man, over
took them and no matter how hard they chased him they could not catch
him.

Well, just to let you know, I encountered his son Ipod Boy the other
evening. He was wearing baggy track suite bottoms and ran past me in
Sunningfields Park, along the long back straight.

I was doing a slow 5, and at first thought, let him go, but, suddenly I
saw the Ipod, and that was it, No Way! I felt the frustration of Jeff
and James all those years ago, and before I knew it I felt a
responsibility to right that wrong from all those years ago.

I responded and you will be pleased to know I triumphed by overtaking
him up the hill. I continued the pace until I left the park, it all but
killed me, but at least a restored confidence that Sunningfields Park is
still The Master's Paradise, all be it, only just!

Take care everyone and hopefully we will be able to meet up soon or as
the Haggadah's say, this time, next year in Jerusalem!

Australian Masters Track& Field Championships Perth

I am able to ride my bike without any calf issues so I have been getting out on it recently.

I find that cycling doesn't really tend to raise my heart rate that much so I have turned my 18 gear bike into a 1 gear bike (Biggest wheel smallest cog). It is a beast to push up inclines and requires out of saddle 'running' . On the steepest sections it is all I can do to keep the wheels turning. It has made cycling a much more demanding exercise which really feels great.

The Australian Masters track & field Champs are taking place, as ever, over this Easter Long Weekend. This year its Perth's turn to host the event.

I had been trying to find the results but the promised results on the AMA site never showed.

Some kind folks on CoolRunning posted a link to the WA Athletics site which does have them here

As I would have expected John Jago took out the 800 and 1500 in my M45's Cat.

Whilst Bruce Graham has won the 5 and 10,000, leaving him the 8K CC today.
