Decided late on to give the Brisbane Skyrun a go.
Situated at Mount Cootha, a 10.5km road circuit, uphill first 5km and then downhill to the finish.
The first runner I saw this morning Jackson Elliott - first place wrapped up!
Race started right on a huge hill and with normal gusto I charged off. After about 200m I thought I was having a heart attack. There are no hills at North Lakes so this was a very rude shock. I was screeching to a halt or at the very least a jog. Thankfully things levelled out and I got a chance to get my heart rate back into line before we hit the 3km uphill section. I ran well up this section passing about 4 guys. Up ahead was Nick Toohey who provided a more than worthy target to try and chase down on the downhill section. Of course there is a limit to the stresses you can put on an old body so I tried to balance the fear of being caught by the young guys I'd passed on the hill, to the racer wanting to catch the guy ahead. The top 4 were long gone by this stage. Didn't quite manage to pick up Nick I think he sensed me closing in. Happy enough with that effort - when else do you run a 5;00 min KM and follow it up with run that was 2;51 ?
Anthony Craig who I beat by a minute at the Gold Coast finished 4th today a minute ahead of me. Some Mountain runner hey!
I spoke to Jackson after the race who said that Liam Woollett gave him a bit of a scare nearly catching him on the down hill after being well beaten on the uphill stretch.

Many a dodgy meniscus was delivered the last rights running down Mt. Cootha David . The world awaits with baited breath how our hero pulls up . Has he mistaken Mt.Cootha for Mt.Olympus and sort to shake his fists at those mischievous Gods once too often who dwell there and treat mere mortals as mere play things to torment at their leisure ? They that tempt the Gods are brave . Those who get away with it must be Scotsman . Hey by the way mate you blew a big chance to get amongst the cash again out at Fernvale and so post a photo of those capricious fingers of yoirs grasping another winners cheque . You need to pick your races . Just ask the Robot ! LOL .
It was a sobering reminder from the Garmin Lama to his league of followers and admirers on the transient and ephemeral nature of human achievement when he drew our collective attention to the sad demise of Masters's legend Laurie O'Hara . Not that we expect the same fate to befall a man worshipped in India as a living Buddha anytime soon despite tempting fate on the precipitous cliffs of Mt .Cootha but inevitably he too will one day be talked about in the past tense in hushed and reverent tones rightfully apportioned to those living legends no longer among us . This sad but inevitable fact was brought to the attention of park run organisers especially following the Scotsman's dicing with running death on the infamous Widow Maker course this last Sunday past . Rather than be presiding over obituaries that might follow his sad demise it was decided that the GTrain's life should be celebrated at its zenith rather than at it's demise and to this end a special , " Let's celebrate the GTrain's life park run " has been organised for this coming 10th of August at North Lakes park run for his countless supporters to turn up and pay homage to the man who has transformed the very face ( and grasping fingers) of Masters's running and shown age to be a number and not a sentence . Admirers will be able to run the very same and now hallowed pavement on the course where the legend of Mr. Garmin was born . The man himself will be in Glasgow where he is a good will ambassador for a free and independent Scotland but his wax effigy has been repaired and for a small fee pictures can be taken beside it as a momento of the day . Undoubtedly there will be traffic chaos but that is a small price to pay for this once in a life time event and you'd die ( figuratively ) if you missed the opportunity . So why wait for the journey to end . Come out and celebrate it now and be part of the GTrain experience .
Is there wheel chair access ?
Count us in for sure
Will Lusty Lucy be there ?
She'd be in Glasgow with David wouldn't she ? Personally I think there is a bit more going on there than simply his being her manager . I mean a man with a very big Garmin must be a real turn on for a young woman not to mention his charisma and raw animal magnetism . Anyway I'll be there for sure on the 10 th. Hope the pelican turns up . Just one second . That's all he needed . One bloody second ! Can't say that about the GTrain . Didn't let his fans down by one second .
The Pelican is safe if you go on net times but doesn't the IAAF ruling specify gun time for record or blogging purposes ? Surely someone can find the correct ruling on this . There's also a rumour that the GTrain was seen being pushed by Lusty Lucy around the Roo plus Lake in Shardy's wheel chair following his some might say heroic but foolhardy attempt to provoke the running gods to scorn in the rarefied air of Mt.Cootha . The numerous crosses that dot those forlorn heights all bear testimony to athletes retired well before their time attempting to defy gravity as they make up precious seconds in a headlong pursuit downward towards oblivion thinly disguised as a finishing line . Are you still with us Dave ?
Relax Reevsie I'm still here! Just been for a 15K along the Brisbane River - I had yesterday as a day off! Legs are fine - maybe a slight twinge here and there!! The Queensland Duathlon Champs are on 10th August so The Pelican might be unlikely to make it to North Lakes on the 9th.
Your all invited to my humble abode after your run but I wont be able to match Bazza's sumptuous spread. BBQ and Tea.
Congrats on the $200 payday Sunday (I really did choose the wrong race to do hey!).
Of course the 10th of August is Saturday in Scotland . The ' Let's Celebrate the Life of the GTrain ' park run will be on the 9th of August North Lake's time . Can't the Robot even get a simple date right . Hope he won't be slobbering all over the course like at Minnippi world park run challenge . Getting old can be really gross . Hope Olga and Jenny can make it . And for heaven sake bring something edible to the breakfast and don't expect to sponge off David's hospitality like you all did at Barry's . Age grading standard is 80 % for men and attractive women are admitted regardless . Saves my bacon .
I'm not sure if I can age grade 80% at the moment. Do you think I would still be invited to breakfast if I offered to be the official photographer. I've ditched the wheelchair already so I won't need wheelchair access.
The Pelican has kindly offered you his spot Paul as he will be too busy polishing his racing bike for Sunday's Duathlon to attend . We just all hope you appreciate this selfless gesture on his part and that you will as well stop picking on the Robot and help look after his personal hygiene such as wiping the dribble from his face . He spoilt a lot of photos at the Minnipppi world challenge . Air brushing can only cover so much . Hope you all enjoyed the photos I posted of Dave on Mt.Cootha . I was able to air brush out the disfiguring mouth ulcers and I have told him about shaving his prosthetic legs but he said he paid extra for the hairy prosthetics and they were more life like .
I am Thunderstruck.
Hey Scroopey you'd be a mug to miss out on a free feed courtesy of a Scotsman . This is the big one . The " let's celebrate the life of the GTrain " park run . You're over your marathon . Time to look ahead and bring some jelly beans to cheer Shardy up .
In an historic moment for Scotlish history and on the eve of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow a formal reconciliation has been cemented between the Scottish clans of Cameron and McSweeney to heal a bitter rift going back to the Battle of Culloden when the clans were on opposing sides of that ferocious battle that stifled Scottish independence for centuries to come . It is a sad fact of history that Castle Sweeney eventually became a McDonald's fast food franchise and the clan fled to Ireland . Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes David McSweeney restored pride once again in the family name with his heroic and pioneering achievements as the Garmin Lama . In a moving ceremony the two Scotsmen pledged to work together to rid the planet once and for all of cybernetic and dribling life forms and do what the Duke of Cumberland did to the Scots that opposed him that fateful day so long ago . Stuff them well and good . Ian Cameron ( alias Braveheart ) said the performances of his fellow Scotsman had led him to broker the reconciliation and the man known the world over as the Garmin Lama graciously acknowledged , applauded and reciprocated this heartfelt gesture . This is the type of gesture that has ensured the GTrain is a marketing phenomena world wide . Now the two towering Scotsman stand united to take on the robotic opponents of humanity with their motto of truth , justice and the 95% age graded Garmin Way.
Oh David that is just so inspiring . No wonder you're a world wide marketing phenomena .
Spine tingling stuff . The Camerons and Sweeneys united again . The flower of Scotland ....Oh when will we see their like again .....
We're all coming on the 9th .
Alas can't make it on the 9th am in krakow on a stag do. I will see how quick I can go on the krakow parkrun after drinking 10+ pints the night before. Can confirm mr Cameron was looking very strong at new farm today...
Well of course 80% was the cut off mate as poor Shardy found out much to his horror when his B'que invite was not forthcoming as he had hoped it might be with no sympathy being shown for his wheel chair bound plight . As the GTrain so elequently put it in that deep rich Scottish brogue of his , " rules is rules Macca". Looks like Braveheart is heading as well for an unprecedented second week in a row heading the Australian park run age league rankings and is perhaps beginning to even overshadow his illustrious countryman . Oh flower of Scotland will ere we see your like again ......well maybe only when we see Braveheart and the Garmin Lama line up together and be seen to be singing from the same psalm sheet at the same park run venue . Aye now that id be a wee somethin for sore eyes to be sure !
Yes we're all coming on the 9th . Do we bring a plate or a holy offering ?
Can we cycle in pairs over the course and drop by after for the B'Que ?
Tom's good for the 9th
What's the dress code for the 9th ?
Are there any hills at North lake ? 9th is good to go fo us .
I will not be able to attend the glorious tribute run for the holy Garmin Lama at North Loch in the shire of Brisbane. Last month, I received a hand delivered letter from a fellow Scotsman wearing a kilt in the colours of the Sweeney Clan. The letter was sealed in wax with the clan motto " Strike for Victory" clearly visible. The messenger put the twenty cents tip (I reluctantly parted with ) into his sporran and left. The letter was a personal invite from the Garmin Lama himself- to attend the Sydney City2Surf. Without further ado, I sold my three sheep to pay the exorbitant entry fee and booked passage on the steam train from Brisbane to Sydney.
I later learned that I had been deceived by a cruel plot to ensure that I would not be able to make the pilgrimage to North Lochs. By the time, I was aware of this dastardly deception, it was, alas, too late to get a refund. I am now resigned to the journey south. However my absence will not be missed amongst the thousands of true believers who will flock to North Loch to pay homage to the illustrious one.
Be warned you non-believers, the stone mason has already chiseled the Garmin Lama's name in granite at the top of the age graded monument. All that remains is to add the Roman numerals after the completion of the post race ceremony. In keeping with Clan tradition and to promote Scottish culture, Deep Fried Mars Bars and Haggis will be one of the culinary delights available ( for a modest fee)
Braveheart
Hello David.
We are experiencing a few technical difficulties here at Garmin Connect. We realise you have a very important event coming up on the 9th of next month. As you are the face of garmin David and have followers all over the world we can assure you the the site will be up and running well before this event so you can upload your result on your blog. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused and hope your event is a huge success.
Just typical of a gullible Scotsman to be fleeced of his three sheep plus twenty cents and be hoodwinked into running some very minor fun run at the edge of the antipodes and than bleat that he'd been hoodwinked . I suppose this too will be laid at the feet of the poor slobbering Robot as will the technical difficulties at Garmin Connect . Maybe the holy Garmined One of North Lochs needs to tend his flock with more due care and diligence and offer suitable recompense in porridge and haggis for his league of followers who turn up on the 9th .
Hey David we hear that you were able to get Caber Tossing reintroduced to the Glasgow Games . Is there room in your backyard for a Caber Tossing contest on the 9th ? Barry reckons he can beat Con and the boys want to lay bets on it . You'd have a few Cabers hanging around in the Garden shed wouldn't you ? The smart monies on Con but apparently Barry has hired a professional Caber tossing coach which shows the extent an Irishman will go to beat a Silician in a Scottish sport .
Having spelt Sicilian incorrectly your life is now forfeited .
