My recovery from B2B was the typically painful next day run on Monday followed by a trot with the dog on Tuesday morning and then Nudgee in the evening Tuesday.
Nick Toohey was doing the right thing, taking a rain check on a session following his run at the B2B and it left me all by myself at the track with the infield taken up with a bunch of footballers (RL) doing some training.
A mate from Loughborough days Andrew Green (a 2;10 Marathon man) had told me about a session we used to do back then 35 years ago (!!!)
A George Gandy session.
10,0000m variable speed, fast lap followed by recovery lap.
He did the session recently and challenged me for comparisons sake.
Conditions were good, no wind, not cold not warm. Andy did the session in 35 or 36 mins and I had no idea what I might run but of course wanted to beat Andy as he thought with his stamina he'd edge me on this session. So I hit lap one in 75 and rolled into lap two trying to judge what pace to run the slower lap at.
I felt pretty good, my knee pain was minimal and my float lap was very comfortable and my fast lap felt similar to my 20 X 400 sets.
I checked my watch at 3000m in 10;10 and was able to get into a very comfortable rhythm. 5000m in 16;59 and 6000m in 20;20 so I was holding pace but really hadn't cottoned on just how fast I was going. At times I felt my concentration waver and had to switch back on my On effort and even once forgot to switch off as I cruised through into a recovery lap.
I think 8000m was 27;30 (not sure) and finished with a 69 for 33;46.
My fast laps averaged 76.4 and my float laps averaged 84.0.
I was amazed at that running 10000 in 33;46 in a session by myself where I'm only making an effort on 13 of the 25 laps!! That is outrageous! its preposterous! I just cant make sense of it other than even if I say so myself it is freakish! - am I starting to write like the Robot?
For some perspective the best time anyone (M50) in the UK has run this year on the track is 34;32 and 33;30 on the road and I'm running 33;46 in training!
Ronnie's Australian M50 record is 32;53, if I can just find the right race soon as!!
Here is the session on Garmin, please ignore the distance and pace but please note the variable speed and heart rate patterns.

Grave fears are being held that David McSweeney, known more on this blog as the Garmin Lama , has fallen under sinister and malelovent influences of late . His close companion (?) and friend , Lucy Lovelace , is reported as saying she holds grave fears for him . " He's been mixing with that Robot creep of late . I even caught him with three day's growth of beard and told him to shave it off immediately . I don't trust that Robot . He's got shifty eyes . Barry was a good influence and I thought Braveheart would be as well . Instead he's mixing more with this Robot creep and his gang of misfits . David's even starting to write like the Robot . Just rubbish . I'm very worried . Can someone out there help . Coach Dion where are you ? He'll listen to you . Ronnie are you out there ? "
Yes , very sad that David may have gone over to the dark side . I feel he needs to get back to basics and to his grass roots and mix more with his adoring fans . Perhaps spread the gospel of park run love to a new venue . Perhaps Golden Beach park run ? It's nestled amongst some delightful retirement villages . Plenty of elderly to be comforted at the Adjacent Golden Years retirement village . An opportunity to mix with real flesh and blood people and not cybernetic. low lives . I've talked with Coach Dion and he's in full agreement .
It's all right Lucy . David is just undergoing a metamorphosis . He's evolving to a higher spiritual dimension . That's all . Nothing to be overly concerned over . His body is becoming more spiritually awakened as a consequence of the Cranial Garmin implants and therefore lighter and faster as a consequence . He vibrates now at a slightly different frequency to normal humanity . His times as a consequence are improving at an exponential rate . Peter Nowill captured the phenomena when he remarked to his coach , " I never actually saw his holiness the Garmin Lama pass me but felt more of a spiritual presence . Very calming and as if I had been touched by the wings of an angel . Very emotional . I asked for an autograph at the end but he seemed to just disappear before my very eyes and I was left with a telepathic message that in the pursuit of world peace and love I should venture to Golden Beach park run on the 20th of this month to hear a gospel of intergalactic love and goodwill . " Surprisingly Al Stevenson said he felt much the same phenomena when passed by the Scotsman . " I had a sensation of bag pipes playing and then a slightly built ethereal figure seem to float effortlessly past me . I knew when he smashed me on age grading last year it was only a matter of time till I was beaten by him across the line." The former winner and one of the pre race favourites was quoted as saying .
M50 record doesn't really count when an M55 has run 31:5X
But you're in great form nonetheless
Thomas you're missing the point old boy . The Garmin Lama experience is much more than a record . You obviously haven't heard him playing the bag pipes have you ? Come on Tom own up to it . A little jealous are we ? As you so eloquently express it , records are a nebulous and temporal phenomena with an element of ambiguity that deters one from expressing them at times with chronological certainty which is to say an older man may on occasion defy the ravages of time and post a time that may be statistically inconsistent with preconcoievved prejudices ( or record books ) . Tom my advice is for you to pack up your doubts and that you attend Golden Beach park run this coming Saturday the 20th of September and there like some doubting Thomas you touch the wounds of the Garmin Lama still vaguely visibly from the Garmin implant surgery and you too will become converted and experience the magic of being close to a running phenomena . A force of nature . A statistical running anomaly . A freak ......By the way Dave how's that filter going . Honestly some of the rubbish appearing on this blog as informed comment is close to libellous .
OMG Tom's a lawyer .
So because Keith Bateman has run 31:56 for a world record and so become the oldest man in history to break 32 minutes somehow to break an Australkan record of 32:54 in the lower age group doesn't qualify it as meaningful . I guess it would take a lawyer to draw that sort of conclusion and be ungracious enough to post it as an informed comment . Maybe Tom has just had a bad day at the office , running or otherwise . Good to see that Tom has listed his ambitions as being to break his fathers's PBs . That sounds safe and modest enough . Leave it to others to tackle the real record books . The measure of a man's success is often measured best by the barbs of the doubting Toms .
Yes David I fully agree with anonymous . I think the Robot put this peeping ( onto your blog) Tom fellow up to this . The Robot has never forgiven you for humiliating him at Gold Coast and the B2B . He thinks he can hide behind his gang of cronies and goad them into these snide attacks that question the depth of your spiritual metamorphosis . It's a measure of your magnanimity that you don't filter this rubbish off your blog . If this Tom character turns up on the 20th of September at the Golden Beach park run he does not get a Lusty Lucy Lolly Pop . No way . Neither does the Robot .
Yes I'd agree that this so called "Tom" is little more than a cynical mouthpiece for the Robot spreading his cynicall and dehumanising cybernetic agenda. The Golden Beach park run on the 20th of this month has now been designated as " LET'S STAND BY THE GARMIN LAMA DAY " and everyone is encouraged to attend . Pre race festivities will include burning effigies of Tom and the Robot and the Garmin Lama is expected to perform a flaming bagpipe solo following what is hopefully a celebration of Scottish independence as well . What a treat !
Can someone post a picture of Tom . I'm making up my effigy to burn but I don't know what he looks like . Does he look like the Robot ? David can you post his picture on your blog as a community service . By the way I'll be there for sure on the 20th of September at Golden Beach . Hope there are no council ordinances prohibiting the burning of effigies in public or park run spaces .
I think Tom is pissed off that the Garmin Lama is pro Scottish independce . He's obviously supporting the No vote on September 18th . Sometimes it's want people don't say that gives them away . A fully trained professional psychiatrist , such as myself , can detect the tell tale signs of a political activist quite easily and Tom shows all the symptoms of someone in Scottish denial . I'd say he's from Yorkshire and has lived in Glasgow as a youth where he was bullied . He's migrated to Australia ( or fled there) but has a profound distrust of all things Scottish . I prescribe Lithium for his condition as the drug of choice and counselling in how to manage his subconscious hostility towards all things Scottish . As I'll be attending the park run at Golden Beach on this coming Saturday as part of the ' Psychiatrits who support the Garmin Lama ' movement I could certainly talk to Tom ( at a discounted fee) and offer support .
Maybe this Tom fellow is from interstate and couldn't be bothered to travel up to Golden Beach to meet the Garmin Lama in person and get humiliated by him in the Golden Beach Park Run. I can't find any Tom's in the 1st pages of the Gold Coast Marathon or Bridge To Brisbane results. Just to run in the same race with the Garmin Lama is a privilege. He has his name beside the great Steve Monagetti in the record books. And he purposely slowed down in that race so he could share the record. Tom, I think you better get yourself to Golden Beach Park Run this Saturday the 20th of September to run and meet the Garmin Lama in person because he'll be there and so will I because I'd love to run against him even though I know I'll get thrashed by him. You never know Tom, the Garmin Lama might even warm down with you if you ask him nicely. Don't worry about what Keith Bateman's done the Garmin Lama is a man on the rise. You could always try keeping up on Tooheys Tuesday. Everyone should make sure they're there on Saturday at Golden Beach.
Yes I couldn't agree more . KB is definitely overrated . For a start he can't play a musical instrument . Secondly he doesn't have a cult following . Plus now he's the given the Garmin Lama a target to shoot at . The GL hasn't had a target to shoot at in the past and that makes a big difference . I just hope he doesn't slow down like he did at GC to share a record . The GL has to become a little more selfish . So I hope he beats KB's time and doesn't slow down to just equal it . Everybody knows who Tom is . It's the Robot . He's going to burn at Golden Beach on this Saturday . His effigy I mean .
Hi Tom
I don’t know if you are actually a real person. My initial impression was that you were perhaps an agent for TomTom and were trying to discredit the wonderful Garmin products. However, on reflection, I came to the conclusion that using a singular ‘Tom’ as opposed to the plural wouldn’t fool anyone?
Perhaps you are a runner of some repute? You may even be the ‘Robot’ and once again scheming to undermine the Garmin Lama? However, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you are just a misguided and ill informed runner. Now, it is bit unfair to comment negatively on the Garmin Lama's spate of recent victories and remarkable times. Any comparison with other Gods of the track and road must be considered against the background of the historical perspective.
Keith Bateman, the supreme being of age grade world records, is without a doubt, untouchable. As he approaches his three score years, it will only be a matter of time before further records tumble. Tom you should be aware that Keith Bateman lived in Aviemore in Scotland, as a downhill ski instructor. Ptarmigan in Aviemore is located at an altitude on 1,097 meters. There is rumour that this is the site of a clandestine training camp for elite runners. (Training techniques reportedly, include running through the heather in bare feet while playing the bagpipes. Heather generally grows to a height of 600cm so this promotes high knee lift (otherwise. you would stumble and a swallow an awful lot of pipe). There is antidotal evidence suggesting that the arduous breathing techniques required to master the art of bagpipe playing is beneficial to increasing one's V02 max and lactic acid tolerance.
Garmin Lama’s (Dave McSweeney) ancestral home is Castle Sween near Argyll in the West Coast of Scotland. This is not that far from Aviemore and the road runs east through Fort William. It is rumoured that the Garmin Lama often disappeared from Castle Sween for extended periods and was reported to have been seen it the vicinity of Aviemore with a pair of dunlop volleys around the neck. It is possible that both Keith and the Garmin Lama are both beneficiaries of this secret training facility. Their appearance in the antipodes over a decade ago may not be by chance. Keith is obviously the senior athlete who took the running world by storm. However the Garmin Lama is 7 years his junior a 'sleeper' waiting to explode onto the world age grade scene. The Garmin Lama has been distracted by the huge workload of his media commitments and his training regime has inevitably suffered. Tom, you would not be aware or be privy to any master plan that may have been devised by Keith and the Garmin Lama from the misty heights of Aviemore in bygone days. Keith could be paving the way for the ultimate one the.... Garmin Lama....
Tom, as a mere mortal please show at least a modicum of respect to the two deities.
Yes well put Braveheart . Keith Bateman is certainly playing the role of John the Baptist to the Garmin Lama's messiah . KB is pointing the way . A voice crying in the Scottish wilderness . A new age is dawning . The Garmin Age . As with all spiritual renaissances there are those that would stand against the forces of enlightenment . Tom and the Robot are names that come all too quickly to mind . But we must not forget that darkest agent of all things dark and sinister . Of course that agent is complacency . Evil flourishes only where good men and age graded tragics sit idly by and do nothing . That's why it is important that as many turn out as possible this Saturday at Golden Beach for the ' Let's stand by the Garmin Lama ' park run and in doing so be counted amongst the Garmin chosen and in doing so will send a clear message to the likes of Tom that , " you're as mad as hell and you're not going to take it anymore !"
Yes I'm glad Braveheart has pointed out that David is more than just a runner . He's a celebrity and gives of his time unselfishly to the media and his fans to promote worthwhile causes . What has Tom ever promoted other than a nihilistic and soulless future for mankind ? He's little more than an ontological epistemologist sprouting his narrow minded and corrupted agenda that stands to limit the full potential of mankind and condem us all to a sterile future of age graded mediocrity rather than reaching to those sun lit plains extended where the common man is girt with hope to be better tomorrow than he was today .
Just a reminder for everyone in regards Saturday's park run . Try to be early and on time . We remind every one that the Garmin Lama has not , we repeat has not , committed to attend so any unruly crowd behaviour or rioting will not be tolerated if he in fact does not attend . His holiness cannot attend every function in his honour as he is a celebrity in demand the world over . The unruly behaviour at the Rocks park run where the popular Scotsman was a no show will certainly not be tolerated here . Effigies of Tom and the Robot will be burned at 6:30 and following this there will be a short reading from the Book of Garmin . Apparently there is some elitist function for age graded try hards following the run but it has no official sanctioning and certainly is not accredited to sell Garmin Lama memorabilia . We hope everyone enjoys themselves but if Tom turns up he will not be recognised in the results and we take no responsibility for his safety . We'd thank the robot not to dribble all over the course like he did at Sandgate . Braveheart will not be attending and it isn't our fault we couldn't raise his appearance fee on time . These Scotsman don't come cheap that's for sure . However there is the possibility that Con Dimauro who makes a handsome living impersonating the Garmin Lama due to an uncanny physical resemblance may attend . So that's at least something for the crowd to look forward to and you can have your photo taken with him ( $50) and no one will spot the difference .
Tom is correct my M50 Australian Record is quite lame compared to Keith Bateman’s M55 performance. Kudos to Keith: I say. He is great athlete, an honest competitor, who has a sensible, methodical approach to his training and racing, and more importantly, from my experience, he is a nice person. Much like Dave (and Robot, et al).
My M50 record is what it is and I did the best I could considering the circumstances at the time, I think my record is okay for a club/state-level hack like me.
I see a day when M55 and perhaps M60 runners will be running under 30 minutes. Let’s hope their fans are more sporting towards KB than KB’s fan (Tom) has been towards other "try hards" like me.
Anyway, Dave it is good to see you racing well after all your setbacks. Re: needing a race to capitalise on your current fitness. In case you are unaware, there is a Zatopak “b” grade race held around the time of the real Zatopak10. Yeah, I know it is in Melbourne, but you are National/World level Master’s athlete, and well: you only live once. Best wishes with accomplishing your racing challenges.
