Humidity in the Tropics

Wed eve 11KM Roo+Lake
Thurs eve 6K Roo
Nice and steady, was thinking a little bit about my running gait. Trying to get up onto my toes and tried to get the arm action into a good rhythm because my belief is I must look fairly shocking right now!
It is humid as !
My choice is run early at 5.00am it is only 25 O C but 80% humidity or when I get home from work like tonight when at 5.30pm it was 28.4 O C and 64% humidity!
Of course I could decide to run at lunchtime but 33.2 O C and 47% would keep me sweating an hour after a cold shower!

Dicky Beach

I had Monday as a recovery day!
Today we are celebrating Australia Day at Dicky Beach so rather than risk more blisters with another beach run I got up at 5.00am and ran Roo+Lake 11KM.
Enjoy and celebrate Australia Day our truly blessed and great nation.

Red Beach to Woorim and back

Red Beach to Woorim. 11KM ?

Nat, Max, Lily and me headed up to Bribie Island with our Beagle 'Sandy' and picked up Maralyn (the Mother in Law) and 'Luke', her little Fox Terrier, along the way (Beachmere).
We parked up at Red Beach and whilst the others took the dogs for a walk .I headed up the beach for a run, turning around on half an hour.
I made it as far as the stormwater outlet at the start of Woorim - the patrolled beach was just up ahead!
I'd made it to the other side of the island. Running bare foot and top less I thought I'd pay the price! Blistered feet for the second weekend in a row!
It was a priceless change of scenery, once you get a few hundred meters out from Red Beach you are by yourself. Running the southern end of the Island brings you from the tranquil sheltered waters of Pumistone Passage to the 'surf side' at Woorim. Along the way , one giant loggerhead turtle in the clear waters just off the beach and hundreds of the dreaded 'Bluebottle' jellyfish - Stingers!
Sadly no sign of the lovely lady running along the sand from two posts ago!
Hope my feet don't take too long to recover!

Wooloongabba

Fri 4.45am !! 6K Roo
Sat 11K Roo+Lake

Went to a party last night so I missed the wonderful run chase by the Ozzies at the Gabba.
I nicked this photo from the BBC, great sunset at the hot and humid Wooloongabba cricket ground.

We are top of the League I said we are top of the league!

Wed eve 6K Roo Slow
Thurs 5am 11K Roo+Lake S L O W

I've decided to do a Pete Magill and throw away the watch! What is the point of timing these training runs other than to beat myself up about not running times I used to walk in my sleep.
It is all about the effort and right now as ever I'm giving it the maximum effort that I'm comfortable with. Nice to get out this morning and run in some cooler temps!!

Arsenal had the chance of going top of the Premier league if they could win by 2 clear goals today at home against Bolton again. Looks like they've come unstuck as they went 0 - 2 down early in the game : (
- Football !
Update!!!!!!!! Arsenal come back and win the Game 4 -2 , WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!
I SAID, WE ARE, TOP OF THE LEAGUE

Australian Masters Half Marathon Results

Not currently being competitive means I nearly missed this important result from last week!
The Cadburys Hobart Half Marathon combined as the Australian Masters Half Marathon Championship.
Congrats to Bruce on adding this title to his 10K and 5K track National Track titles last Easter.
Bruce finished 3rd overall!
It was also good to see World class M49 Half Miler (and Miler) John Jago taking part at this distance but I guess it is his home town! (or at least his home State).
I hadn't heard of Andrew Allison before, perhaps he is fresh to the ranks of the M40's ?

Unbelievably humid

Got home from a hard day at the office (ha ha!) psyched up for my run contemplating an 11K but yesterdays run and the journey home on the train - standing room only, led my R.knee into an ache and I determined just a 6K would be more than enough. My new neighbour a 35 y.o Masters touch footy player ( John Beazley formerly from Wagga Wagga ) was heading out the door at the same time so we ran together. Of course you can guess that even being neighbourly I could not hold myself back (aching knee and all) and when he offered me to run on ahead I duly obliged at the 4K mark. It was incredibly humid and the sweat poured off me like a tap - love it!

11K Roo+ Lake and Mooloolaba

I spent Sunday at the beach with Nat Max and Lily up at Mooloolaba. We are blessed to be only about an hour away from the Sunshine Coast beaches . The water felt really warm probably about 25 O C not quite the 30 O C in our pool but really really nice.
I blistered the souls of my feet by walking on tarmac Saturday (long storey!) and could not run but I was determined to get out Sunday arvo and push on beyond the 6K limit I've been running. The feet were sore but more importantly everything else was OK as I ran my first Roo+Lake for what seems like a year!!
It was still real warm (30 O C) so I sweated buckets but delighted to complete what I regard as proper training distance. I will see how I pull up today (Monday).
Last night I got to bed early only to be woken at midnight by a mighty storm, cracking thunder claps and a welcome 13mm of rain!
I got up between 2.00am and 4.00a.m to watch Arsenal beat Bolton 2 -0 : )

Summer Days

I ran 6K Roo Wed, Thurs, and Fri. All untimed but decent efforts. I'm optimistic that this at last might be a come back. Of course I don't intend to overdo it but will try a slightly longer run today, however it's already 28 O C (82 O F) and not a cloud in the sky!

Tallebudgerra Dreaming

Whilst on Hols down the coast I managed a couple of easy beach runs , just a few K's.
I think it was the first time in memory I hadn't taken my running kit on holiday in a deliberate attempt to rest the knee to the maximum extent. So' runs' done bare foot and in board shorts.
The kids ribbed me about my paunch and in some ways I don't mind carrying the extra weight as it will keep me from doing too much too early. If I can keep running I'm six months to a year away from full fitness.

Got home on Sunday and ran an untimed 6K Roo. Then again on Monday evening I managed to complete a relatively pain free 6K Roo. I'm still worried about doing too much as I feel the pain could still return if I over do it, so it's a rest day today!

Jim Beisty - Reflections of a Runner

Jim recently left some comments on a post and I asked him what his story was and he sent me a booklet he'd published in 1985 detailing his running career from the 1950's. A fascinating account of one guys running career from its inception in Merseyside in the UK through Canada to Newcastle Australia. His early inspiration was Emil Zatopek. Jim preferred the Marathon but ran all distances road track and cross country. He details the early days of Masters - then Veterans running in Australia where he raced against such
legends as Dave Power and Tom Roberts. He even raced against Geoff Moore from ACT who is still running today. In later years Jim put his talents and experience into coaching many NSW State Champions. This is a book that you all would enjoy and Jim you should look into publishing it on Google, thanks for sending me a copy.

Bushey Quarter Marathon 1990

One of my children dug out this old photo today which after a little detective work, I deduced, must have been the Bushey Quarter Marathon in 1990 or 1992 (I think I only ran it twice).
First in 1990 and beaten by the still active Julian Critchlow (photo below) in 1992.
The photo line up above is me, Stu Moore , Kevin Falvey, and Col Pearson.

I'm off to the Gold Coast with the family for a weeks R & R.
