The Harrisons Sydney Half Marathon Festival!

Can you believe the weather in SE Queensland over the last month! Daytime temps in the upper 20's in the middle of Winter! I normally call it Summer when the Temp first gets up to 30 O C, today the forecast is 29 O C!!

I asked Dr.Jamie Harrison for a race report following his Sydney Half Marathon on Sunday.

Well, I'm still alive! A tough race today, but reasonably happy. I was 8th in 1.13.38. Jeremy Horne won in low 1.09, followed by Dave Criniti just under 1.10, Kevin Robertson just over 1.10, Glenn Guzzo (not sure of his time), Mustapha Takkediene (? spelling) and Chadi Elashkar mid 1.12s and Robin Whiteley (whom I coach) 1.13.24. Guzzo pushed the pace early with Horne and Criniti in touch. We then had a group of Robertson, Mustapha. Chadi and Troy Sundstrom. Our group started to break up at about the time Guzzo started to drop off. I was just behind Chadi and caught him on the first hilly section. We ran together for a couple of km when Mustapha and Robin caught us (about half way). I thought Robin and myself would be stronger, but Chadi and Mustapha proceeded to put a minute on us! The later stages were a real grind. Luckily I had Robin not too far ahead and just tried to keep the legs ticking over. Fortunately the blokes behind weren't making much ground.

Richie Roberts did 1.14.40 and Rob Spilling about 1.17.

I ran 30 secs faster than last year. I was reasonably pleased because there were some good signs. I went hard early and still managed to not fall apart. I've had some really good training over the past few months (I had a 101 mile week followed by a 83 mile). Unfortunately with illness these have been interspersed with 20 and 30 mile weeks. Hopefully I can consolidate in the lead up to the World Masters Games.

I've actually entered for the Sydney Tower run on Friday. I'm not really that keen on stair running, but they have a 45+ age group (the oldest age), so I figure there aren't too many blokes who should beat me. I'm not really looking forward to it though!

My sister, wife and kids did the 5k. Lisa my sister was first woman, Mary 3rd 40 - 49, Anne 1st 15 - 19, Robert 2nd 12 - 14. Mary ran 2 mins faster than last year and Robert did 20.25 compared to last year's 24.51!

My dad was 2nd in the 65s to World 1500 Champion Don Matthewson in the short course cross country a few weeks back. I think we're looking good for 3 generations under 20 mins soon (I also think my daughter will do it as well).

Jamie, there are no blokes your age who should beat you unless the specialism of running up the stairs of Sydney's iconic tower proves otherwise. It must be a real special pleasure to be able to share your racing with so many of your family!
