World Masters Track and Field Rankings

The World Masters Track and Field Rankings for 2009 have been posted here
There are some obvious updates still required but the work that goes into producing these must be enormous!
Great to see Jamie topping the list for the 10,000! his times for 1500 and 800 are missing as is Allan Cookes 2m00.7 M45 800m.
Keith Batemans 1500m isnt posted yet. Ronnie Peters tops the M55 10,000m.
Really good to see Brett Winter and Bruce Graham feature prominently.
Visit the site for the full selection but here are a few of the current lists.
Sorry about the layout but its difficult to get the configuration to display!

World Masters Games Sydney Mens 5000m

Jamie leading the way in the M45 5000m in his Australian gold singlet and green shorts, looking well relaxed!

Some terrific performances today in the 5000m on a windy Sydney Spring day!

Jamie got his 2nd Gold and 4th medal of the Games, I suspect he was somewhat conserving himself for the 1500m and the Half.Looking at his time, I half suspect he may have ran in the same 'race' as Keith Bateman and run around with him (wrong! this didn't happen!)Jamie reported;

"I noticed a slight calf strain warming up for the 800 final. I didn't
feel it in the race, or the cross country but it was worse
afterwards. It was really no better today so I decided to run in
flats. Luckily I had an easy race for a change.

I just ran fast enough to stay in front. When I could hear the heavy
breathing dropping back I would slow down. I picked it up just before
the bell. It was then that I could feel the calf. The last lap was
about 65, enough to do the job in 16.15.41.

Lisa my sister (after finishing 2nd in the 1500 on Tuesday - she
could have won the cross country but it was on at the same time)
passed the Russian in the straight to win the F40 5k.

Richie Roberts again ran them off their legs in the M40.

Hopefully my calf can hold up for 3 more races."

Keith's time of course on a windy day for a 54 year old was exceptional (though he will be disappointed he didn't run 15m45!!).It was nice to see Keith pushed by a Kiwi, a rare occurrence for him to be challenged! Never the less, Keith moves up to M55 in June, when he will rewrite the record books!

Richie Roberts shows he is in fine form following his victory in the Cross Country with a fine solo 15m36.
Of course all performance deserve merit but I thought that M65 Don Mathewson 16m41 was in a class by himself!!

Jamie said

"Don Matthewson in the M65 I presume ran 18.41 (not 16.41). He
certainly bounced back well from his 4th in the CC. Maybe the 800
takes more out of you than I thought!"

and hats off to all the M80-84 year olds stella stuff!

World Masters Games Sydney 800m and XC

Mens M45 800m Podium; Allan Cook , Jamie Harrison, Jonathan Wheatland

Richie Roberts Mens M40 Cross Country Champion with M45 Jamie Harrison runner up in the M45 Cross Country Championship.

The photo below shows Jamie in Green about to lap someone on the 3 lap course.
Jamie continued his quest for 6 medals at the World Masters Games today in Sydney. He won a close fought 800m from Allan Cook in 2m05.12. Great time considering windy conditions, though I'm not sure they had the 35 O C temps we had today in Brissy!

The Cross Country course looks like it was a real mix of grass and pathway. I don't have the CC results yet but is that a Silver medal around Jamie's neck along side the Gold from todays 800m?
He is pictured with Richie Roberts (the winner) of the M45.

The Mens M45 800m Podium looks like Land of the Giants!!
Of the 800m Jamie said
"I should also have mentioned it was really windy today. I'm hoping
that accounts for the slow time.

Allan Cook went through halfway in 1.03. I would have been 2 seconds
back.

A dissapointed Jamie further commented about the Cross Country ;

"Sorry I didn't divulge much about the cross country - it was a bit of a disappointment.
We had a quick presentation for the 800 then went to Parramatta Park. I had about an hour to spare. The course was supposed to be a 2k then2 x 3k laps. In the actual race I discovered it was 3 equal laps! The temp was in the high 20s, very windy. The start of each lap has a gradual uphill of about 400m. The surface was level and firm with no mud. That path section in the photo I sent was only short and okay with spikes.
I felt sluggish off the mark and was behind the main group. I picked off one or two, but by the end of the first lap it was Richie Roberts and the Russian (M40 10k road winner I think), then Peter Brett and Sean Williams (M40), then me in limbo. I was hoping they would come back because I didn't have much to give!
It basically continued that way with the gaps widening.
I was a bit disappointed because Rich hasn't beaten me for a while and it's only the second time Sean has ever beaten me. I'll have to blame it on fatigue!
Today is a rest day for athletics.
5k tomorrow. Hopefully no fresh runners!

I think we can all understand a bit of fatigue creeping in with your schedule and those temps!

The standout performance would have to be the incomparable Earl Fee of Canada running the 800m in 2m49 at the age of 80!

Jamie Harrison Blogs World Masters Games Sydney

Jamie ran the heats of the 800m at the World Masters Games today in Sydney.
Here is what he had to say;
"I was in the first of 3 heats (first 2 to go through and next 6
fastest). I went through 200 in about 30 and was well in front. From
there I just cruised sneaking a look back every so often, winning in
2.12. Allan Cook in heat 2 looked good, running a similar race to me,
although another bloke who looked to be going flat out edged past him
near the finish. An old adversary of mine, Barry Moore battled it out
in the 3rd heat, losing out in the end. That heat was about 2.10,
although they looked to have not too much left.

It's shaping up (as I expected) as a battle between Allan Cook and
myself. I'm not really sure how to run it, but I do know that with
him being more a 400/800 runner I don't want the first lap too slow.
It should be interesting!

I then have to get myself over to Parramatta Park by 1.30 for the
cross country (the 800 is at 11.44)

I have a bit of adductor, quad and calf soreness, but not too bad.

Hopefully I'll have good news for you tomorrow!"

Jamie needs to get from Sydney Olympic park at 11.44;03am to Parramatta Park for his 'warm down' at 1.30pm - no sweat!!

Here are the Mens qualifying round results (space limits me from posting all age groups and womens results)

World Masters Games Sydney 10KM Road

The athletics events kicked off today with the 10KM Road Race.
M45 Jamie Harrison reported;

Last week I noticed Russian Oleg Strizhakov entered in the 10k road
and half marathon. His 5k and 10k PBs are similar to mine. He ran the
10k in Barclelona and marathon in Atlanta. He ran 31.45 last year on
the track and on the road earlier this year he ran 31.38 and 48 min
for 15k. I was hoping he wouldn't show up because his road
credentials are better than mine!

Anyway, the race started and a Swiss 35 year old went to the front.
Strizakhov, an M40 Russian and myself (in that order) formed a group
behind. I was starting to feel it towards the end of the first 2
laps, and had to make the decision - do I run my guts out trying to
hang on (and still maybe get beaten) or do I ease off and go for 2nd?
I opted for the latter, holding off the next runner (also M45) by
about 20 secs. I was half way down the back straight when the 2
Russians ran in together. It's actually the first time I've ever had
2 runners over 40 in front of me in any race!

When I decided I'd try all 6 events I hadn't planned on having to run
hard to win the first one. There goes the idea of winning 6 golds!

The third bloke had a South African accent but is living in Sydney (Andrew Wilson). This was his only running event as he is going in the Sailing. Not a bad runner for a sailor! Queues down here have been a nightmare. I queued for nearly 4 hours on Friday to get my accreditation. Yesterday I queued for an hour to get my chip and numbers for today. I saved 2 hours because someone I know got me in with them!
I did 33.18 to Strizhakov's 32.25. People with Garmins were saying it was 100 - 200m long. I've pulled up pretty well, so hopefully will be okay for the 800 heats tomorrow.
Great race Jamie, and you made the right choice to conserve yourself (even if it goes against the grain!). What I wanted to see at the Games in Sydney was 'quality competition' and that seems to have been the case with all things considered (100/200m long) a better quality race in the M45's than at the WMA Champs on the track in Lahti!!
The organisation seems to have been a big let down, I couldn't bear to queue for 4hours!
The hope is the organizers learn from this and make sure the rest of the Games are a roaring success!

London 2012 .., Who's in the running

My mate Jeff Kaye said by chance his Brazilian Catholic wife was handed a free copy of the Jewish Chronicle whilst shopping in Mill Hill. Jeff is not a regular reader but you can imagine him chuffed to pick it up and read an article 'The State of Jewish Athletics' by Brian Sacks and see that he and another of our training buddies Danny Felsenstien got a big wrap as "virtual internationals"! The article also mentions our other training partner, full GB International, James Espir and the guy who this Summer beat my 31 year old, Shaftesbury Harriers Under 17 3000m record - the very highly talented Richard Goodman.
Nothing really Masters about the piece other than the three old men of Jewish athletics are my friends and each tries to remain active, though Danny would be the only one you'd describe as competitive (I should talk!!).

Frank Mahoney on Cross Training

Franks wonderfully informative reply to my response was;

David

Thanks for the info.

You commented: "I am interested in what results you get from your cross training?"

Some background info:

In my younger days, this was my training schedule.

Mon: AM: Swim easy, 1500m
PM: Run 8-10km easy
Tue: AM Swim sprints
PM: Run Track, 3 x 1600 hard
Wed: AM Swim hard, 2000m
PM: Run 16km hard
Thus: AM: Swim sprints
PM: Run 16km easy
Frid: AM: Swim hard, 2500m
PM: Run 8-10km easy
Sat: Run Race or 10km easy
Sun: Run 20-30km long or Run Race

Aim was for quality km rather than quantity - so as to manage my pronation issue.

Swimming was great for allowing additional hard training, without any of the stresses that running would bring. Recovery was very quick, i.e. 30 minutes after a hard session, it was like you hadn't done it, compared to hard or long runs that can beat up the body, especially the legs.

It also provided a massage to the legs, helping to recover from the week-end race.

There was also no injuries from the swimming.

I don't think it can replace basic running training, however it allowed me to develop a good engine, and compete with guys who were doing 150-200km per week.

It's one potential downside was I wondered if my engine was more than my wheels, i.e legs could cope with.

Overall, I thought the swimming was a great help, and the swimming was only undertaken to assist with the running, i.e. apart from the Mon to Frid swim sessions, I did not swim in any races or Triathlons etc

More recently, I wouldn't consider that I do cross training. I started swimming to lose weight and get fit, and swim to continue on this basis as well as to improve my swimming.
I cycle to keep fit and improve my cycling.
And I run to improve my running.
I will go in a number of Triathlons over the summer so I need to train in all three.

I do believe that my training combination of swimming, cycling and running provides me with a far more sustainable fitness program than just 100km of running per week. I say that for myself, as my legs couldn't cope with 100+ km per week.

With swimming, some find following the black line of a pool boring, for me, I find it somewhat relaxing as you can tune out. 5 of my 7 swim sessions are with others so it is not too bad.

I also discovered that keeping my sessions to 45 min to 1 hour meant that they are long enough to be beneficial, but not so long that mentally they freak you out or physically wear you out or take up too much time each day.

The training in swimming, cycling and running opens up other opportunities, for example adventure racing, aquathons etc. I recently went in a relay team of 5 that swam 18km from the Fiji main island to Beachcomber Island. And also a Aquathon at Redcliffe.

One great training session we do each week is a Tri session of 1km swim, 10km ride and 5km run. It is approx 20 minutes of each and gives you a good work-out, with the run quite tough after the bike.

You should get into Tri's, as I have discovered a lot of them can't run. So imagine what you could do.

Cheers Frank

Thanks for that Frank - very very interesting , I have said for years that I'd love to

'try a tri' ,(my mate Jeff Kaye always said I had the physique of a cyclist (big leg muscles!) however, though I think my cycling capability might be quite good, I am not convinced that my swimming would - but you know what, I do love a challenge and maybe I just might!

More likely I would try Duathlon or just simply check out the Masters cycling scene.

Incidentally what about Cadel Evans World Championship??

Wasn't that fantastic for a guy who has had quite some criticism, to come back and fully answer his critics with Australia's first ever Cycling World Championship Gold Medal!!!!

I am interested in seeing the benefits of cross training specially during my seemingly never ending injury spell and am tempted to head down to the pool for a first session!

My knee reacted badly to my birthday run : ( I need to get a diagnosis !
