Pumicestone Passage

Sun Midday 11KM Red Beach to Woorim and back

Ran into the breeze on the way up = nice and cool but with the breeze behind me on the way back it felt really hot. I was dripping sweat . Ran about 5mins quicker than previously. Finished off with a swim in Pumicestone Passage with Natalie, Max, Lily and Sandy (The Beagle)!

Pushing On

Fri 5.00am 11KM Roo+Lake
Sat 6.00pm 11KM Roo+Lake 47m14s

Went out for beers last night so morning was recovery.
Then did a weights session.
My standard session is currently;
5 X
50 X Push Ups,
12 Chin Ups,
10 X Bench Press (50KG),
30 X Leg Extensions (30KG)
20 X Stomach Crunches .

Then I seemed to spend hours strimming the lawn, cutting the grass and then blowing the loose cuttings. It was tough going on a warm (30 O C) and humid day.
Really felt as if I was pushing on tonight flowing a little more easily but actual time is still well beyond my previously slow pace.

Day Light Saving

Wed 5.00am 11KM Roo+Lake 48m44

It is dark at 5.00am in SE Queensland and we don't have Day Light Saving!
However , as it takes me 10mins to get out the house, daylight is breaking.
I timed today's run to see how I'm going, and of course I'm horrified!
I am attacked by mozzies as I ice my knees after my run , it's all this rain.

In reality I'm pleased to be able to string the last few weeks together after 18months off!
It is a long road back...

Enola Gay OMD

Mon 5.00am Roo+Lake 11K
Tues 5.00am Roo+Lake 11K

Not much variety there then! The only thing to report is getting drenched again this morning.
When I woke up I heard rain and thought bugger it I'll run lunchtime or in the evening but in the end after 5mins guilt got the better of me (a very good sign) and so I got up and ran in the rain!
The sign of a serious runner!
More of the same tomorrow.

If anyone didn't know, Enola Gay was the name of the US Army Air Force B29 Superfortress Bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. OMD's classic has been given a modern day dance mix by French DJ David Guetta.

Lightning Bolt

Sun 9.00am 17KM Roo+Lake+Roo

We had 76mm of rain overnight and when I went out it was still raining! Absolutely drenched and I guess running on the sodden nature strip beside the footpath added to that! Was quite stiff from yesterdays trail run or was it the climb up the 'mountain' ?
Whilst I was out ,another 26mm of rain fell!! Thats 101mm in less than 12 hours ( The Tropics!)
Later in the morning, back home, there was a flash of light (Inside the house) as a bolt of lightning must have hit pretty close by followed a second or two later by the most almighty clap of thunder I've ever heard. The whole house shook.
I will be interested to see how I recover from 17K's.

Wild Horse Mountain

Fri 5.00am 11Km Roo+Lake (topless!)
Sat Midday 12KM Wild Horse Mountain

For years I have driven past the State Forests and Wild Horse Mountain lookout on my way up to the Sunshine Coast. So last night in a bid to provide a change of scenery I researched runs at Wild Horse. (This is Bellthorpe Country :)
I found a course that had been used last year in the WHM Criterion Trail Races. The lap is 10.5KM of rocky, sandy (my favorite), aggregate and mud paths that loosely take you around the mountain. Never having been there before it was wise of me to take along a map and stick closely to it! Of course with the temp at 31 / 32 O C (low 90's O F) I had chosen the toughest time of day to run. The first part of the course runs down the trail alongside the Bruce so no peace or tranquility there! But soon your running in towards the forests and running in complete isolation from humanity. The trail runs back alongside Tibrogargan Creek on beautiful sand paths where there was also some shade. I had thought about doing two laps (21K) but in the end thought I had lost so much fluid that I had too stop and take on some water.
After sucking down 2 liters in 10seconds flat for "fun" I thought I'd run up the "Mountain" !
There is a road to the top which goes straight up i.e. no hairpins and it is really really steep! It was all I could do to run it and not stop!
Only 700m long but 123m of climb!
At the top you are rewarded with spectacular views of the Glass House Mountains and across Pumistone Passage, Bribie and Morten Island.

I think I have found THE HILL for future Hill Sessions!
I didn't take my camera but found these images on Flicker. Cheers

Going topless

Thurs. 5.00am 11KM Roo+Lake going OK!

Another humid run!

At 5.00am the reported humidy was 90% !

I'm going topless tomorrow!

Followed run with a weights session (Call it core if you want).

Sporting Mortality

Tues 5.00am 6KM Roo went well

It's going OK! I'm starting to come alive again. Of course I'm very concerned about hitting further roadblocks in my come back but I'm happy. I shall do at least another 4 weeks of just steady running before I progress with anything more intensive. I have a lot of weight to shift. I'm cutting the 'weights sessions' down to every other day.

Great post on Globe Runner by Pat Butcher on Sporting Mortality and Immortality largely based on Geb. well worth a read!

02 February 2010

Tropical Cyclone Olga

Tues 5.00am 11km Roo+Lake - tough going!

Tough going in my condition when you top and tail sessions (Evening run followed by morning run).
The blanket of cloud that has been in our skies the last few days is still there. We are in the margins of Ex Tropical Cyclone Olga. This has led to showery conditions with buffeting winds. The temps are only in the high 20's but the humidity is still here.

01 February 2010

Snakes on the run!

Mon Eve 11KM Roo+Lake - pushed it - felt OK

Continuing the theme of 'nature on the run' !
this evening I came across a Brown(?) snake crossing the path in front of me! just a hundred meters into my run!
Actually I might have done a service to the community as it was heading towards a kiddies playground but when it saw me, it headed away (I'm not a pretty sight ) off into the bush.

31 January 2010

Octopus at Red Beach

Sat. 11KM Red Beach to Woorim and back.
Sun 11KM Roo+Lake - I'm just starting to feel like a runner again!

Sat. I ran with my shoes on ! The blisters from last week still haven't healed!
A heavy shower meant the beach was near deserted. But the clouds and rain soon blew over and I ran largely in sunshine.
Council had closed off the beach at Woorim 50m before the stormwater outlet, looked like they were trying to do some anti erosion measures.
The giant tutle I had seen last week must have been dead as the remains of its carcass were on the beach.
The only other thing of note was "a giant starfish" washed up near the end of my run.
I insisted Natalie and the kids walk up to see it, turns out it was an octopus! I said I was brought up in London where we didn't get to see either!

Monnas

If anyone hasn't read it yet, there is a really excellent interview with Monnas on Younger Legs

Keith Bateman M54 5000m 15m52.1

Fri 5.00am ran 11KM Roo+Lake slowly in the rain.

Last night in the NSW State titles in Sydney Keith Bateman (M54) ran 5000m in a fantastic 15m52.1 which improved the NSW M50 record by 10 secs and was just 3 secs shy of the Australian M50 record! In a couple of months Keith will be 55 y.o. and he will have no problems breaking National records then. Pete Magill says that's a 93.93% Age Graded performance!
This was a momentous run ! Congratulations!
Results also confirm good runs from Brisbane locals Jared Hauschildt, Jay Twist and Ronnie's son, Johnathon Peters.

Humidity in the Tropics

Wed eve 11KM Roo+Lake
Thurs eve 6K Roo
Nice and steady, was thinking a little bit about my running gait. Trying to get up onto my toes and tried to get the arm action into a good rhythm because my belief is I must look fairly shocking right now!
It is humid as !
My choice is run early at 5.00am it is only 25 O C but 80% humidity or when I get home from work like tonight when at 5.30pm it was 28.4 O C and 64% humidity!
Of course I could decide to run at lunchtime but 33.2 O C and 47% would keep me sweating an hour after a cold shower!
