Click on one of the arrows at the bottom of the page to get the 'full page' of results. It is a sneek preview as results aren't  officially published till tomorrow!
I am very happy to get 13th best ever result and I was the 1st Male over 35 y.o.

Mon 5.57pm Roo+Lake 10.52km 45m09 4m18 K's
Tues 5.33am Roo+Lake 10.61km 45m36 4m18 K's

I pulled up with really sore thighs after Sunday, not sure if it was the race or the clamber over the fence at the start because I never normally suffer DOMS after a race.
I've set myself an unusual challenge for tomorrow!
Brisbane's first ever Stair Race - the tower isn't that big, 31 flights, but if my legs were sore Monday they aint gonna like Wednesday/Thursday!
It is madness I know but I can't not race it - the building is opposite mine in CBD.
Has anyone got any tips for stair running??

Bridge to Brisbane 2011 - 13th 34m07

I made it to the start line - Just!
That's me first left in Government Tee Shirt and Cap!

Bridge to Brisbane 2011 by brizzygooner at Garmin Connect - Details

10KM  13th  34m07.

I left the house at 4.45am which was plenty of time to get to the race start the other side of the bridge for a 6.10am start a journey time of approx 30mins. I get to the slip road off the Gateway at 5.20am and sit in not unexpected race traffic. Still got plenty of time but I did not expect to just sit there going  no where for 40mins!
I cant understand how the police did not control the traffic flow better! Eventually park the car at 6.00am ! I have 10mins to get to the start about 1.5km away. The Bridge to Brisbane is a massive community event with thousands of runners taking part and I was thinking perhaps they'll delay the start because of all the traffic problems but it appears only people from the North side might have been affected and the organisers were probably oblivious! I start running through the throngs of people to get to the start line. Easier said than done when there are 30,000+ runners! Take a detour down a slip road and then have to climb over a wobbly 1.2m chain link  fence. I have just noticed a bruised thumb that I can only attribute to my less than athletic clamber!
Got to the Elite Runners start line and push through to the tape with a minute to spare. My mouth was seriously dry, like never before even though I had had two cups of tea since waking at 4.00am.
The gun goes and perhaps because there is a division between the elites and the next set of runners things are quite conservative. It might also have been that the 1st KM is all uphill ( Sir Leo Hielscher Bridge  spans the Brisbane river and is 2km in length. I notice 3 or 4 Africans (Tanzanians?) who have been absent from the B2B for a couple of years and Jackson Elliott (winner at Gladstone and Peter Nowell the two local favourites.
So I start to settle into things when we finally start to run downhill and am running in a group of runners that I always seem to run with during these races. Saw the guy who finished 3rd at Gladstone and stuck close to him in a group till 5km. The lead pack (8 ?) had gone out of site, then there was a 2nd pack or 6 or 7 runners then my group of 6 or 7 runners. I noticed the Garmin was in accordance with the Race KM's up till 5th KM when the road KM's went about 100m past the Garmin KM alerts. The pace felt fast and I was at a 100%.
After 5km our group fragmented and inevitably I got isolated and ran the last 5km pretty much by myself though one guy was just out of reach about 4 secs up on me. The 9th KM goes into an  underpass (tunnel) and I wonder if the Garmin loses signal for about 100m. Running uphill from the underpass and further up over an overpass makes for a real struggle and the Garmin recorded it as 3m45 for that KM !! Not sure about that and maybe the tunnel does affect readings as at the finish the Garmin came back to near spot on the same as the Race KM's. I pushed' hard as' over the last KM  though as a general rule there is absolutely no movement in race  place from 5km's to 10km. However, someone might have been creeping up on me as I started to notice the clapping and cheering as you go past spectators and how they tend to give special attention to the first female! As I rounded the final corner in the Showgrounds the announcer called "here is the first female - Cassandra (Cassie) Fien! I couldn't let the 'being Chicked' thing happen again though I must resign myself to that happening more and more in the future!
Crossed the line and waited a second or two then stopped my watch on 34m09. Disappointed about the time but happy I didn't get beaten by Cassie and I have a good chance of making the top 20 so two out of three aint bad ....
It will be interesting to compare times of other runners but I was about 30secs up on last year.
Results come out tomorrow.

10 September 2011

Laurie O'Hara

A rest day for me  today as I'm racing tomorrow. Hoping that the howling gale outside dies down!

More results from 1978. I was 16 years old and had some ups and downs. The down was being beaten by Club mate Phil Llewellyn in the Southern Champs even though as he'd opted to represent Wales (Boy O) meant that he competed as a 'guest', nevertheless, I was horrified with my race, got home that night and ran 10miles (for a 16 year old that was some punishment!). Two other races that Summer I ran 8m39.6 and 8m39.0 as well as a 8m41 so you might see my point? Adolescence caused a number of inconsistent performances I seemed to run well some weeks and awful other times.
I've mentioned Laurie O'Hara before but I am going to mention him again. Like Alan Bradford and Ronnie Peters in Australia he ran through out his 30's 40's and 50's (Alan is still going in his 70's!), running phenomenal times. The Belgrave Club 5000m Champs in 1978 when he was 46 winning in 15m36 but that year he had run 15m05 and 31m39 for God's Sake! I invite you to have a look at his Power of 10 profile here  remember the Lauries early results are unlikely to have been recorded in the 1960's and 70's and look at his  Club Records he set as 40, 45, 50, 55, here
Tomorrow I wont be happy with anything other than sub34m and top 20 (and not getting Chicked!).

Extreme behaviour?

Thur 5.30am Roo+Lake 10.58km 44m21 4m12 K's
Fri 5.39am Roo+Lake 10.54(!)km 43m29 4m08 K's

Trying to hold myself together! - on top of the niggles, I get the train home yesterday and a guy sits besides me and starts to cough! He continues to splutter sporadically and I become increasingly indignant that he should choose to sit beside me and potentially  infect me with a cough right before the Bridge to Brisbane on Sunday morning.
I pull up the collar on my jacket to provide a partial barrier to the germs heading from him towards me, I turn my body sideways to further prevent the virus heading for my lungs, he coughs and I hold my breath for as long as possible to allow the germs floating in the air to fall away from my catchment breath area.
I actually fish out my handkerchief  from my pocket and hold it to my nose/mouth as another barrier ! I admit I didn't keep the hanky at my face for the whole journey!
Thankfully he got off at Northgate and the relief was palpable.
Is this extreme behaviour or just part and parcel of being a runner?

AAA Championships 1978

Wed 5.36am Roo+Lake  10.58km 43m33  4m07 K's
Tues 5.36am Lake+Roo  10.60km  42m57  4m03 K's
Mon  5.40am Roo+Lake  10.58km  47m34  4m30 K's

In a year when I ran 8m39 finishing 11th in the Youths AAA Champs in 1978 was a big disappointment .In hindsight it wasn't that bad,if you  discount O'Keefe from Ireland then I finished 10th in a National Champs.
Gary Taylor and Kalvin Newton ran brilliantly considering they were a year under age. The Junior race was a galaxy of stars. 17th John Doherty ran in two Olympic Games for Ireland (Seoul & Barcelona) 5000m PB 13:14.17.

#2.   69.57  153bpm
#3.   70.61  155bpm

#8.   68.79  158bpm
#9.   68.33  160bpm
#10. 66.40  161bpm

Windy conditions led me to change my plans for running long intervals (2000m) to 400's, had to battle wind first bend and finishing straight.A  fair session.
Some track results from 1976 I was 14 years old.
Racing me at Luton was Billy Dee. Billy was another guy who went on to perform brilliantly as a senior getting a National vest. His PB performances were;
1m54.8
3m41.9
3m59.17
7m42.77
13m27.41
28m00.64
62m33
2h50m22 in 2003 ten years after his main track career finished in 1993.
The 3000m puts Billy 15th on the All Time British list. After many many years running for Luton, Billy joined our Club,  Shaftesbury Harriers. An amazing talent.

Mickey Morton

Sat 2.15pm 10.57km Roo+Lake 39m33 3m45 K's  very windy

More races from 1976 including the Biggleswade Easter Monday Road Races.
17th in the Seniors my mate Danny Felsentein who now lives in Israel and still runs and competes.
2nd in the Youths was my mate at Loughborough Tim Redman.
Winner of my Boys race Dave Swain who went with Gary Taylor on a scholarship to Arkansas USA.
Results on top  RHS  are from the Leicester Open.
1st in youths Mickey Morton was an unbelievable smooth easy style runner of supreme quality.
13th in my race Paul Davis Hale became a British international on the track who ran 1m52, 3m43,3m56, 7m44, 8m20S/C, 13m21,28m24, 61m39 and 2h11 - some record hey?
I remember turning up late for the International Athletes Club Boys XC Race at Crystal Palace didn't have much of a warm up and was disappointed with the result but it was a pretty close race! All those guys were good runners.
In the Havering Road Relay team my club London Irish came second, we were not used to success so that result in itself had merit. The guys in my team were a year older than me but we had quite a balance team.
In the Youths race Colin Reitz became a British international steeplechaser. He was a flamboyant character!
Running with Jeff Kaye in the Shaftesbury Youths team was Stuey Moore. I flatted with Stuey in Fairlight in Sydney in 1988/89 - the guy who was the catalyst in first getting me to travel to Oz! Now living in Perth and playing Football with occasional runs.

The Southern Boys Cross Country Championships - Windsor 1977

Thur 5.40am 10.58km Lake+Roo 42m03 3m59 K's

More results from the past (1977).
The Parker Cup Races were in Stockport near Manchester.
Phillipe Brown (from Luxembourg) , his mum and I got the train up from London. I have almost no recollection of this race other than it might have been the week before or after the England Schools XC  .
I never heard of the guy Vince Taylor from Blackpool who beat me, before or after! Andy Green was a year younger.
The Southern Boys at Windsor was a great race, I remember it being very muddy with lots of large puddles. The great Andy Bristow and Col Pearson beat me in a close run finish.Again I finished ahead of soon to be Club 'mate' Phil Llewellyn ;)
23rd was Lee Cockett who around this era became a legend winning the All England Schools Junior 1500m. A great talent that sadly disappeared from the running scene far too early.
The Middlesex County Championship results bring back many memorable names in the Junior Mens Race nearly all of those guys had successful and long running careers.
13th Johnny Broe  went to my school and had a big influence on my career and now lives in Balgowlah (Manly Sydney). Lee Benjamin and Pete Holland continue running masters in England.
My best mate (Best Man) Jeff Kaye came 2nd in the Youths beating Cliff Barley who had won the English Schools XC in 1975 (Junior Boys) .
